Susanna is interested in the intersections of ideas, people and cultures -- particularly in the way personal
narratives and collective histories are constructed. She takes a decidely Egglestonian (or democratic)
approach to her subjects, eliminating hierarchies and challenging assumptions about things being
opposites or mutually distinct.
Narrative and storytelling using literal images and color is a primary interest, greatly influenced
by three authors: Joan Didion, Haruki Murakami, and VS Naipaul. She is currently obsessed with the
photographs of Hannah Collins (hannahcollins.net)
and Miguel Rio Branco (who is really hard to track down), as well as long-time favorites Josef Koudelka,
Catherine Wagner, and Francesca Woodman.
Born circa 1973, Susanna earned a BA in Literary Non-Fiction writing and Photography from Hampshire College.
A native-Californian, Susanna has lived in Japan, Mexico and England, and she travels whenever she possibly can.
She currently lives in Oakland, CA with her husband and three kids.
Many of Susanna's photographs are available for license or purchase as limited edition archival prints.
She also loves individual commissions, documentary-style portraiture (family, friends, parties) as well as
freelance documentary work in general. If you have an idea you want to discuss, she'd love to hear from you.
Susanna photographs every day, and many of these photos can be seen on her Flickr photostream.
